Contrary to police expectations, the crowds in Admiralty were getting larger, not dispersing. The protesters remained peaceful, sitting on the road facing the riot police and singing a popular Canto-pop hit by Hong Kong band Beyond, ‘Under A Vast Sky’. The tune would become the unofficial theme song of the movement.

At the same time, spontaneous ‘occupations’ broke out in other key locations in the city: the Causeway Bay shopping district, the tourist hub Tsim Sha Tsui and the working class Mong Kok district. It quickly became apparent that police simply did not have sufficient ranks to clear all the roads, and so they retreated, ceding the streets to protesters.
